ADHD in Boys vs. Girls
|
Does age make a difference?
ADHD can be different throughout a child's life. Most children are not diagnosed until they are in school but signs can be present beforehand.
Signs of ADHD in preschool and toddlers years can be not following the rules, hard to keep eye contact, trying staying calm during car rides. By the time the child is in elementary school, they may become diagnosed or recommended to a doctor for diagnosis. Usually a doctor won't prescribe a child ADHD medication until they are six years old and it is the parent's decision if they want to put their child on medication for ADHD. You need to be aware because when the child enters high school they are at risk to many other struggles such as low self-esteem, eating disorders and reckless behavior. You need to be able to seperate normal teenage mood swings with ADHD behaviors. ADHD can last into adulthood but the adult becomes more aware and can possibly control themselves better by this point. They are still able to be medicated if they wish. ADHD is said to be genetic so they need to be aware of the signs and symptoms in their children so they can get them the help they need. |
